Healthy Eating
Eating a healthy diet is important for leading and living a healthy lifestyle. Healthy eating is not about restricting or completely eliminating foods you love or following unrealistic diet plans. Instead, healthy eating is simply about learning how to “eat smart” to reduce your risk of health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Learning the habits of healthy eating begins with knowing what you eat and how you eat. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans give you important tips or recommendations for how to eat healthy while still taking into consideration food preferences, cultural traditions, and customs unique to many populations in United States.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010, emphasize three major goals for Americans:
- Balance calories with physical activity to manage weight
- Consume fewer foods with sodium (salt), saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars, and refined grains (e.g., white bread, white rice)
- Consume more of certain foods and nutrients such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and seafood
